The Sado Estuary Nature Reserve Portugal

Add caption
The Sado Nature Reserve  is round 23.160 hectares .  It is declared a natural reserve for more than 300 + species.
Sometimes when taking the old road to Lisbon ,closing in near to the salt flats and the wide open spaces of the estuary we can often catch a glimpse of some of the magnificent Flora and Fauna of this area.
Storks, Herons, Flamingos, White Swans and more.   The fish species include Bream, Mullet, Skate, Sole and the Lusitano Toad fish.    The estuary extends as far as the salt water at the river mouth.
Playful bottle nosed dolphins follow the fishing boats or the odd yacht out for a sail or a day's catch..

The Sado Estuary twists through diversified countryside, of huge rural properties connected to agriculture and forestries. Areas rich in fish and sea food.

Some of the Flora within the Estuary area

                                                        Grande Egret
I wrote a post about Alcaçer do Sal some time ago.  This is one of the views looking towards some of the Sado Estuary.  Very strict rules are applied to fishing in these areas ..Its of great ecological importance.
Its area is full of marshes and rish in rushes..  It also extends to the sea.

I thought this such a lovely post for the last  Sunday in November.   With Autumn leaving us soon.
I am happy here and count my blessings.

A peaceful blessed Sunday to you all.

  1. Dear Val, Thank you for showing us such a lovely part of Portugal, it looks amazing and the clip was fantastic too. It reminds me of our hilday in Tavira and on the last days we went for a walk down to the salt pans and saw two flamingos.

  4. Dear Val - my comment appears to have gone walk about.
I just wanted to tell you how lovely the images were on that short video clip. A lesson for us all on how to take photographs, in particular those wonderful reflections.
I am always amused by flying flamingoes, they remind me of vacuum cleaners soaring through the air.
If my other comment does come through from the blogosphere in due course - just eliminate it please.

  13. Hi Val: What a beautiful area you live by. How lucky to see all the different species of birds and flowers. When we drive to visit our kids we go on Highway 80 by the rice fields and low lands where water sits and we see a lot of herons and egrets. I have always called them my lucky birds, because when we pass, and I see, them we usually have a very good day.. Thanks for your kind words to me about my $ store table. It was a fun project..Happy Sunday..Judy

  14. These are beautiful photos of the Nature Reserve, Val. I've long wanted to visit Portugal, which I hear is unlike any place on Earth. I just love the Portuguese language too--it has such a pretty sound to it. My neighbors are from Portugal, and I love talking to them any chance I get! I wanted to let you know that I was just up to visit my mom, Sheri, for the Thanksgiving holiday, and she gave me the lovely linens you sent as a wedding present. Thank you so much for this thoughtful gift! Both my husband and I were touched. I'm planning to do a post on these beautiful pieces soon, so I hope you'll check back.
